Review of the Aivilo Shirred Top Sundress and Maxi

Hello! I was recently given the opportunity to review the Shirred top, Sundress, and Maxi dress pattern by Aivilo Charlotte Designs. I was really excited for this opportunity to review both for the designer and for my favorite blog, Pattern Revolution. Unfortunately, due to some HORRIBLE weather, getting sick, lots of phone tag, busy schedules, and an uncooperative sewing machine, I wasn't able to get professional pics taken or "finish" the dress (All done minus the straps, so it could be a strapless!)  Plus this review is VERY late. Despite this, I am determined to write a review and throw in at least one pic of the dress :)

So here it is! It is a size 12 months. 

 I consider myself an intermediate to possibly advanced sewer and own my own boutique, "Little Sweet Treats". (Currently only selling at our local farmer's market because I can't keep up with life and my etsy shop!)


Onto the review. I would consider the pattern itself to be a beginner to intermediate level depending on the person. The only reason I would consider it to be "intermediate" is because of the shirring; shirring can be very simple *IF* your machine cooperates, but that is another story!

I made the dress out of a woven cotton, but you could make it out of a knit-this would look especially good if you did it in the maxi option.

The dress itself took me about two hours to make. I think it took me longer because I always have to fight with my machine when it comes to shirring, but there was a lot of hemming.

There were many things I liked about this pattern, the main thing being that it is a great pattern for learning how to shir. The directions are very helpful and clear, especially at explaining the process of shirring.
I also liked the large range of sizes (6 months-14) and the customizability of it- maxi, sundress, or shirt. All the options for the garment had clear instructions, so no matter what option you chose you would have an easy time putting it together.

Lastly, I LOVED that the designer made separate tables for the maxi/sundress and for the shirt as far as sizes went. I really dislike when designers put it all in one table because it gets hard to follow when tables are so big and easy to mix up one size with another when you are cutting.


There were only one thing I disliked. There was a part in the cutting directions that "cut over to taper skirt", this was confusing to me as it was not addressed until later in the pattern. I did read the pattern first, but it would have been helpful if there was an asterisk or something saying that this would be addressed later in the pattern. That may just be me, but I was confused by it!

Overall this was a great pattern and I was very pleased to review it and with the outcome. I would definitely buy more patterns from the designer.

The First of Many! Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant Car Seat

So here we begin with my quest to compile a database of car seats available in the US as of 2013. 
I have a list here of all the seats that I will be covering. 
So starting at the top of the list, we have the Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant Car Seat.

Reviews: 

1) Melissa from Car Seats for the Little’s: 

"Mine was made in 2008 and they have become a little lighter since then. The seat was heavy which I liked, it made it feel sturdy to me.
Something that I found out as my carseat journey began was that it is not a recommended seat because the bottom harness is too high for average babies. 
BabyTrend also previously allowed you to place on top of the cart; This is not recommended nor is it safe for several reasons, two of which are:
The cart can flip and harm baby
The cart can also harm/damage the locking mechanism on the seat. " 

I Loved:
Triangle Handle
No Re-Thread Harness
Angle Adjuster on base to get an appropriate angle for newborns and young babies

I Didn’t Love:
The Puzzle Buckle. It was a pain with a wiggly baby; but I did adjust.
The handle MUST be down while in the vehicle (as compared to other seats that do not require this)

Conclusion:
I loved the seat, but would not buy another again.

2) Heidi from Car Seats for The Little's

"I had a Flex Loc, and I'll agree looking back, I think it was a bad seat for my kiddo... she had a short torso, her harness was always above her shoulders for a good month or two (luckily I did little driving).
I had a Geo and a Mustang, bracing (car seat touching passenger seat) happened in the mustang because of the handle requirements and no one could sit in the Geo because of how far up the seat was.
The puzzle buckle only became an issue as my kiddo got chubbier 
I wouldn't necessarily recommend a Flex Loc to anyone... especially someone with a small car two door car 

It WAS neat that it came with two bases though! Or at least, mine did. I got it from a trusted friend. It's since expired though

I Loved:

Nothing

I Didn't Love:

High Harness

Large Seat-took up a lot of space front to back

Puzzle buckle as child grew

Conclusion:

Would not reccomend or purchase again

My opinion:

I babysat a girl with this seat...and all I remember is how HARD it was to get that puzzle buckle-that thing was a B*TCH(excuse my language...) Especially when it was cold outside and the baby was not a happy girl. It also didn't fit her well. She was a longer torso'd baby and at 6 weeks the lowest slots of the harness were still above her shoulders (for Rear Facing they must be at or below). The seat also took up a lot of room in their mini van front to back. That side of the car you could not enter (unless you were her 4 year old brother who could crawl under.)

Overall:

Would not reccomend, especially for newborns, because of the high harness and the difficult buckle.

It's been awhile!!

So, it has been QUITE awhile since my last post (Almost a month!!) But I can honestly say this is the longest I have kept a blog going (as sad as that is...) Even my sim has more followers and posts on her blog (I'm a bit of a sims addict) as well as more followers, haha.

So heres what's going on this month.

I had spring break, long story short it was an okay vacation. I got to spend time with family,and see my friend's house in Vegas and meet some of her friends. I will include some pics of the grand canyon and the cubs training game we went to!

So theres my vacation! We had some other crazy times that maybe I'll talk about in another post. 

Continuing on, I started back at college and now only have 5 weeks and 3 days left of the semester! (It's not like I'm counting down or anything...haha). 

In fact, I get to schedule next semesters classes in 2 1/2 weeks and I laid out the classes I want last night. I'm pretty excited because most of my classes are education focused (instead of gen.eds)...one of my classes is entitled "Music and Dance for Pre-Schoolers" How awesome is that?!?!

When I am not working on school stuff, I have been doing a lot of sewing lately! I am currently going to be a part of my town's summer farmer's market with another friend of mine sewing my cloth diapers, wet bags, and the occasional outfit! I am really excited and have been spitting out diapers like no other! I'll post pics once I have more done, but currently I am doing PUL One Sized, PUL and fitted newborn, and small and med/large fitteds. I am VERY excited, especially since I am using up a lot of my fabric stash :).

Now if all that isn't enough, I have been able to spend more time with some of my 'older' friends and their kids. I use 'older' lightly, as they are only 5-10 years older than me, they just have kids, haha. I've gotta say, I kinda enjoy spending time with them more than people my age. They are more mature, and treat me more maturely. Plus they don't judge me quite as much for not drinking or partying etc. Plus, the best part, their kids LOVE me (and I love them!) They range in age from 5 months to 6 years, and it is so awesome spending time with the little ones. I get to watch them grow, spoil them, and get lots and lots and LOTS of cuddles. Best thing ever. I feel so blessed to have all of these special mamas and kids in my life. 

So whats to come? Well I hope as summer begins to near that I have more time to post. I'm thinking of doing a blog everyday time thing in maybe June. I'll be doing a couple reviews on new products, one of them being the NextFit (a new convertible car seat by chicco with AWESOME features). 

I hope everyone is having a great begining to April and spring, hopefully it will be less than a month from now when I write again! haha.

My failure as a Blogger as well as some News...

So I'm a failure as a blogger, plain and simple, and I accept that.
I don't have many followers anyway (so thank you to those of you who do...)
Besides I never set a specific timeline for my blogging, so maybe I'm not a failure, maybe I'm just an infrequent blogger xD.

The above is a puggle-a pug beagle mix. My best friend and I will be getting TWO of them (yes we're crazy). We will be getting them late july-early august (depending on when the pups are born). They will be two girls, named Poppy (my pup) and Paisley (my friend's pup). 

So we're so EXCITED! And I cannot wait to share pics as we find out about them and eventually bring them home!

I caved...

I am a horrible person who is addicted to retail therapy and baby gear (I know I am crazy).

I got to try it out yesterday and lemme say, it is GREAT! I used it for a 10 month old who is pretty annoyed with the fact that he still has to be rfing (thankfully his parents are not turning him, unless he starts having health issues, until at least 2). But he LOVED it! He fell asleep within FIVE Minutes!

Also, the base has little to NO overhang in my car (2009 honda civic). And the seat fit up to the 8th recline level, with still enough room for the passenger infront of the carseat to have enough leg room.

OH and not to mention it is SUPER easy to get a nice tight install. Either that or I'm a beast...or both. Hahaha.

Hopefully I will remember to get pics of the seat next time I have a kidlet using it...that and the modes which is pretty nice too!

I will also be posting a few other things about how project life is going for me! As well as school and some pretty exciting life changes later this year! (NO babies haha).

Life

So, this post is going to be a bit scattered, and probably quite short.

I PROMISE I will have my reviews up for the Graco Modes Click Connect, and the Graco MyRide 65 up in the next few days/weeks. I've just been so busy that it's really tough to get a few minutes of peace.

Basically what's been going on is school, school, more school, and the occasional 6-7 hours of sleep (sometimes less). I am working REALLY hard at getting off academic probation. I actually got a paper back today and my grade was 'B/AB' not exactly sure what that means, but I think it's the equivalent of a B+. Given the circumstances, I should be happy, right? Nope. While I am happy I am setting higher standards for myself...I need to get my motivation up. I'm still battling with my doctor and my medication and sometimes it's just to tough to fight about it.

Lets add in some friend drama. You see, I met my friend A earlier this year and since then we've become EXTREMELY close. I consider her one of my truest and best friends. We had decided a couple months ago that she would move in with me, into my parents house, in order to save money. She would have her own room, we would just have to share a bathroom. I know a lot of people say that that is 'risky' and we realize that, but with her family living in Nevada, and school being in Wisconsin, her family needs to save all they money they can. Especially since she is pre-med and will be going to med school. Well we were excited about that...especially me. I've been an only child all my life and I was really excited about living with someone BESIDES my parents. This was until last friday...or maybe thursday, one of those days. She got an e-mail saying she was reccomended to be an RA. Now if you knew A, you'd know that she is like...almost guaranteed to be accepted and get it. I was really dissapointed and mad at first. Eventually the anger went away, but I still have this nagging feeling of being her 'back up'. I know that it's a great opportunity...but at the same time, so many times in my life I have been the 'back up' and I just wish for once I could be the #1 choice...but I digress. I spent two days crying and depressed and now am doing okay...I just wish it could all work out. But I keep telling myself, that if one door closes, another opens. Maybe her moving in here just isn't a good idea and it is the universe's/God's way of telling us not to do it.

Okay, now lastly, I've got positive. For the past 2 weeks I've volunteered with my gym teacher for his 4 afternoon classes on Tuesdays. That is an adaptive class and then an all spanish kindergarden class, and then 2 other kindergarden classes. The last class is my favorite. Not only is their teacher my old kindergarden teacher, but they are REALLY great kids. I love getting the hugs, and I love seeing them learn. Everyday with them is really a joy and reminds me why I am going to this thing called college. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and I am truly excited for the day when I can become a teacher and have a class of my own. I feel so privledged just to be able to work with these kids once a week and help them learn and grow. Even just from knowing them from october to now there are SO many changes...it is really amazing.

So that's it. That has been my life the last couple weeks. I've got a lot of other stuff going on that I really do not want to talk about right now, not horrible, just not ready to get it out of my head. I will hopefully get to that eventually.

My friend's daughter, Amariana. I was able to babysitt her saturday night to sunday. She's finally begining to smile and  coo and all that cute baby stuff :) I feel so lucky to have her and her mama and daddy in my life!

My favs, revised and continued!

So I promised I would have this out awhile ago but I got busy, and forgot, and then school started and then I came up with excuses and I'm just gonna stop now and go on with the point of this blog! :)

ANYWAY

I have a revision to my prior blog with the stroller.
Today I bought...

This is the Graco Modes Click Connect Stroller in Onyx (the only color that was not a travel system)

I love this for a few reasons.

1. The color. It is gender neutral and will not show any stains.

2. The diversity in age range...in the pic above it shows the toddler level but in total there are 10 different positions that work with the stroller...it has the position above, as well as NINE (yes 9!) other positions for a total of TEN different options! The seat detaches and can be turned to face you or away, and the seat can be completely reclined to a sort of 'buggy' look. Also, if you have any of the click connect car seats, that also can connect to just the frame! I do not have the car seat, but I am so in love with this stroller! It will work for ALL of the kidlets I watch who currently range in age from 7 weeks to 2 years and 7 months! (stroller ages...actually watch kids up to 9 1/2 years!)

Also, I need to add to my infant overnight list! 

This is the 'bed' I have...

I have this Summer Infant Travel Bed. This folds up REALLY compact, which is perfect because I don't have a TON of room. Also, it kinda doubles as a 'play area' as far as the mobile dangly thing goes (I have no idea what to call it. ) It is PERFECT for miss Kaya (7 weeks), because not only is it comfy for her, but I can take the sheet off the mattress and wash it! 

Next, I go to my must haves for traveling with a...*gasp* TODDLER! Now it's not that bad. I find it easier than traveling with an infant for a few reaons.
1. Less diaper changes
2. Less outfits
3. Easier to pack for 'long term' (will get to that)

Anywho, here we go!
I have MANY sippy cups...but my favorite would have to be...

The Munchkin 10 Oz Click Lock, No spill sippy cup! Not only are they ADORABLE, but they are light, NEVER spill (thanks to the locking mechinism) are REALLY easy to clean, and hold A LOT. Lucy (2 years 3 months) loves these cups! Especially the flowers :). 

I also own an aluminum sippy cup, and a recycled sippy cup (ones that walmart sells). But these are easily my favorite!

Besides the sippy cup, if I am bringing a child out, I must have this...

This is the Summer Infant Tiny Diner (in green). It suctions to the table and has a nice little 'scoop' to catch anything that spills. It also keeps germs away from kiddies! Whats even greater is it is dishwasher safe and VERY easy to wipe down! I never leave home without it if I even THINK that I'll be out with a toddler.

After that comes diapers, while I usually go with paren'ts choice when it comes to infants, it is much easier to just grab one of these...

A huggie's slip on. These are the absorbancy of a regular diaper, but a style of a pull up. so much easier when on the go. The reason I chose huggies is because it works for all the kids in the age range I watch! (ie, no allergies/bad reactions.)

Lastly, my car seat. 

I have the Graco MyRide 65 in Royale. It is not only gender neutral, but works for infants (on the off chance that I'd need it for a youngin) and toddlers. More importantly, it allows for rear facing up to 40lbs, something that is very important to me (I'll save my RF till 4 rant for another post :) ). All of the kids I babysit and have traveled with so far love it! I just got it in december so I havn't used it much but so far it's great! Not only is it nice for travel, it's really easy to install!

Besides all that, I usually just bring an extra white onesie and an extra pair of plain white socks (you never know what will happen. ) I also have a gender neutral 'wind breaker' jacket that I use in the spring/fall when it isn't chilly when you leave, but as time goes on it gets cooler. 

And that's about it! Thank you all for being so patient with me! In the coming weeks I will attempt to do a review of the Graco Modes Click Connect Stroller, hopefully with an infant and a toddler perspective. Also I will go on my RF (rear facing) rant, which I'm sure you ALL want to hear about (haha) no but really, it is really importnt to me and if I can shed some light on the subject and help educate even one person, that's awesome!

Anyway, it is 11:55 pm where I am and I have class at 8am and am not done with homework yet! (I'm such a college student :P)

My current favs: Babysitter's style (0-12 months, daytime)

Okay, so I figured that for a 'fun' post...I would make a posting about my favorite 'necessities' for babysitting! This is for cases that you will be taking the child out.
I'm going to split this into a couple categories based on age, and how long you are babysitting...

Category 1...Daytime, ages 0-12 mts. 

Car seat, not my favorite, but it is inexpensive and still gets fairly good reviews
It is the basic Graco Snugride Infant Car seat. It is rear facing (rf)  up to 22 lbs and 29 inches.









This is the print I have it in.
Most times though, if I am going to take a baby out, the parents already have a car seat. 9 times out of 10, they have a graco snugride 30 or 35, and for that I just need the base...



This base installs quick and easily (BIG PLUS!)  and works for both the 30 and 35 (not the 22, but I have that base that came with the carseat that I own)

Also, I like to keep a stroller in my trunk. It is so much easier to move a baby around (no matter what the age) in a stroller. For this reason I have a graco stroller that allows a car seat to clip in.



Although it does not match the car seat I have, it is gender neutral, and works with all graco car seats. It folds up quickly and easily and has a VERY large basket underneath. It works up to 50lbs.

Now, after all the 'gear' comes the bag. I've got a few bags, but one major favorite. All my favorite bags are Ju Ju Be. But my favorite would have to be







 

The Ju Ju Be B.F. F. This is not the print I have but I LOVE it. It has tons of room, can be a backpack or a messenger style, has compartments for not only the child but for me! and I NEVER lose anything in it. (Usually...haha).

After that, It's usually based on what the parents have for bottles, nuks, toys, etc. But I always try to bring my own burp rag, dirty diaper disposable bags, baby wipes, and food grade, people safe, disinfectant wipes that I always keep in the bag.

I hope this helps for some babysitters out there, or  some parents! Stay tuned for my toddler edition (12 mts plus) as well as my overnight edition coming in the next day or so :)

2013 New Years Resolutions

So, like everyone else on the planet, I am making new years resolutions...I am PRAYING that I actually keep these.

1. Lose 100 lbs. I am SO UNHEALTHY...and I don't even feel like I am in my own body anymore and it is horrible. Posting my before pic...

So basically I am approx 250 lbs...way too much for my body frame, age, etc. My goal is to be 150, give or take 10 lbs.
My plan? This...


1. Drink water, LOTS of water

Starting with supernatural...and moving on to bones, american horror story, harry potter, and other various tv shows and movies that I am in love with.
3. Work out at least 4 times a week at planet fitness

Hopefully this works...I cannot stand to look at that picture anymore and know that is how I look.







Onto number 2...
Get into a study routine, and get at least all B's if not all A's this semester (pretty self explanatory).


After that...Not exactly sure yet but that's a good start :)
